A properly designed warehouse racking system will save you money by:
Reducing labour costs in the stocking and selection of goods
Postponing the need to expand or move by maximizing the storing efficiency of your current space
Reducing the amount of damaged goods by storing them in a special type of racking designed especially for that product
In order to create an efficient and cost effective warehouse layout, several factors have to be considered:
The size, weight, and type of goods to be stored
The type of lift equipment you own or plan to purchase
Your existing warehouse space, taking into consideration such factors and the placement of dock doors, the ceiling height, staging space needed, and a logical product flow

Pallets can be stored in a wide variety of storage racks. When choosing the most appropriate rack for your warehouse, you need to consider several factors:
The size and weight of your pallets
Your warehouse design & layout, which includes factors such as ceiling height and product flow
Special circumstances related to your product, such as needing to store in cooler or a need for secured storage
The weight of your pallets will determine whether you need a roll formed or structural rack. The most common type of pallet rack is Selective Pallet Rack, this is where pallets are generally stored one deep with a 10 to 12 foot forklift aisle between rows (single or back to back) of rack.

In a storage area where goods are being handled manually rather than stored on pallets, a Bulk Storage Rack is used. Bulk Storage Racks generally have a lower capacity rating than a pallet rack. However, when storing heavy products that are still being manually handled, some users opt for storing the products on a pallet rack with rack decking. Since bulk storage racks are used in hand picking applications smaller aisles are required to be around, on average, 3 to 4 ft. The heights of the racks need to be at a height which can be reached by hands. However, taller racks can be accessed with rolling safety ladders or a catwalk system.
Racks which are specifically designed for non-palletized bulk storage are:
